Kuala Lumpur

Coming to the end of my first 24 hours in KL. The flight over was OK, but different, having elected to fly with AirAsia X, the long haul offshoot of Asia’s #1 answer to EasyJet. I was prepared for the fact that the services on offer would be basic, which is just as well. I had already paid extra for the privilege of carrying 20kg of checked in baggage plus onboard hot meals. In the event I could have done with even more baggage allowance as I was having to pack for 4 months away from home. Luckily I managed to sneak through security at Stanstead with 8g in excess of the allowed carry on allowance, otherwise I would have been stuffed!

My flight departed at 1:25 AM, but Stanstead was already like a ghost town by 11 pm, with all the bars and restaurants closed, and a whole lot of bored Asians wandering around looking for something to do. Once on board the rather spartan AirAsia A340, I discovered I was sitting right at the back next to the toilet (that will serve me right for not paying the extra for a pre-booked seat!). But at least there was plenty of leg room in their economy seats. No in-flight entertainment of any sort, either seat back or cabin. Just as well I had a few movies to watch on my laptop until the batteries ran out. Annoyingly, but predictably, the cabin crew insisted on serving a evening meal at 3am, so no chance of sleep until that was out of the way. Other than that, not bad for £310 return.

I am staying at a cheapish hotel near the city centre for a couple of nights until I have sorted out my rental apartment. I went to view somewhere today, which seems perfect, with a great view of the twin towers in the distance, and the building site that will become the king’s new palace. Should be able to move in on Friday assuming the funds transfer OK from my bank, which is one of my tasks for tomorrow. After a late start, most of today seems to have been taken up with various other chores like getting broadband internet for the flat, etc. Now off for a beer and some music.
